The Thing

A Scenic Concert Based on a Film by John Carpenter, with Music by Enno Poppe and Hans Zender

An undefinable entity infiltrates a research group in Antarctica—with a predictable outcome. In the scenic landscape of this horror film, seven musicians find themselves stranded. They explore their surroundings and gradually begin to occupy them, repurposing the stage for their own needs. A concert begins. Disturbances emerge, disruptions spread. Infected by the film, the space takes on a life of its own, even generating musicians of its own. Imitations of sounds mutate within it, infiltrating the performance of the seven musicians—and eventually, the musicians themselves. Trapped within the infectious imagery of the film, the works Lo-Shu I by Hans Zender and Brot by Enno Poppe begin to mutate into a new variation.
