1984
1984" based on the novel by George Orwell
A new stage adaptation by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan
"Big Brother is watching you." In the state of Oceania, the omnipresent surveillance of the Thought Police ensures the rule of the Party elite and "Big Brother." The people's right to participate in decision-making has been abolished, and information about time and world affairs is strictly controlled. Winston Smith secretly defies the Party, keeping a diary of his forbidden thoughts and emotions. When he meets Julia and they decide to rebel against the system, they have already fallen into the Party’s crosshairs.
Since Edward Snowden, we know that the internet has created entirely new possibilities for state control. Against this backdrop, Duncan Macmillan and Robert Icke examine the world’s most widely read science fiction novel from a future perspective—the year 2050—and explore the extent to which facts can be trusted and the interplay between truth and propaganda.
